Link Noted Between Otitis Media and Obesity
September 19, 2011
A possible link has been discovered between chronic otitis media with effusion and obesity in children. A study published in the Archives of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery suggests that otitis media may cause taste changes which can lead to obesity. Chemical taste tests were performed to measure taste thresholds of 42 children who suffer from chronic otitis media and found a higher taste threshold in these children than in the control group. Researchers suggest that this higher taste threshold leads to slower taste satisfaction, thereby causing a higher consumption of calories. At the ENT Institute, our physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating chronic otitis media as well as all other forms of ear disease.
