Hearing Loss Cited as Possible Cause of Depression
October 26, 2011
Many new research studies are linking hearing loss to a variety of medical conditions, including depression. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that when these patients use hearing aids, they experience significant improvement in quality of life as well as decreased depressive symptoms. These individuals also have a significantly higher self-image compared to those with hearing loss who do not wear hearing aids. The Director of Better Hearing Institute, Dr. Sergei Kochkin, PhD, states "when left unaddressed, hearing loss can lead to isolation and other emotional conditions that can affect both quality of life and mental health". This correlation between unaddressed hearing loss and depression is compelling, as a study by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) found that people 50 and older with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, anger and frustration, emotional instability and paranoia, and were less likely to participate in organized social activities than those who wore hearing aids. The degree of depression and other emotional or mental health issues also increased with the severity of hearing loss. If you or a loved one are possibly suffering from unaddressed hearing loss, our physicians and audiologists at Georgia's ENT Institute are here to help determine the degree of hearing impairment and discuss appropriate options. Call us today for an appointment for a complete audiological evaluation!
