We offer allergy testing and allergy shots. Our testing is focused on the allergens that directly affect the nose and sinuses. Our allergy testing is performed in the office and usually takes one hour to complete and results are available immediately. Comprehensive therapy is provided at our facility on an ongoing basis. ENT's allergist helps to reduce allergic symptoms that are exacerbating or promoting the sinus condition by using the most accurate and sensitive testing methods available.
A bit more about allergies:
Almost fifty million Americans suffer from nasal and sinus congestion known as allergies. Allergy symptoms occur when the body’s immune system reacts to a foreign substance (an allergen). The body’s immune system sees the foreign invader as dangerous and sends a defender known as an antibody. The conflict between the allergen and the antibody causes a release of certain chemicals, such as histamine. These chemicals produce changes in the body and result in the symptoms that we feel.
Common symptoms that are caused by an allergy include itchy eyes, sneezing, nasal stuffiness, nasal congestion, drainage, and sometimes headache. Other symptoms include difficulty hearing, scratchy sore throats, hoarseness and coughing. Still others complain of balance disturbances, swelling of the face, skin irritations, and breathing difficulties.
Allergy symptoms may occur all year long or may only be present during certain seasons of the year. Allergens can be almost anything. Pollens, food, mold, dust, feathers, animal dander, drugs and environmental pollutants are some of the most common causes. Seasonally, pollen causes significant problems for many people. On the other hand, some a llergens are always present. Mold spores cause at least as many allergy problems as pollens and are particularly difficult because they are present both indoors and outdoors all year long.
Allergies are rarely life threatening yet they cause significant problems. Lost workdays, decreased work efficiency, poor school performance, and less enjoyment of life are just a few of the common complaints. If allergy symptoms are poorly controlled, they often develop into more serious consequences such as chronic sinusitis or respiratory infections. Considering the millions of dollars spent on anti-allergy medication and lost work time, allergies cannot be considered a minor problem.
The most useful treatment plan incorporates a multifunctional approach. A detailed history and physical with an otolaryngologist, combined with allergy testing, determines the specific substances to which you are allergic. The medical management of allergies combines proper medication, counseling on environmental controls, and the consideration of immunotherapy. The only “cure” for inhalant allergies is the administration of injections that build up protective antibodies to specific allergens. A number of medications may also be useful in your treatment including antihistamines, nasal decongestant sprays, steroid sprays, and saline sprays.
Consultation with one of our otolaryngologists will assure your best treatment options. You may schedule an appointment by calling 770-740-1860.
